The AFC/M23 fighters were observed withdrawing from parts of Lubero territory in North Kivu between Monday and Tuesday, March 24, according to reports and videos circulating on social media.

Local authorities confirmed the development, although no official statement has been issued by the lebels regarding the withdrawal or any redeployment of its troops.

According to local sources and multiple reports, the rebel positions and camps, which were occupied for over a year, have been completely abandoned in Kipese, Munyakondomi, Ivatama, Ilambula, Luseke, and Musimba villages.

As of now, the fighters reportedly retreated with their military equipment to other areas in southern Lubero territory, which have not yet been identified.

Local authorities, including Colonel Alain Kiwewa, the administrator of Lubero territory, confirmed witnessing the withdrawal in several villages but remained cautious.

“At this stage, it is difficult to determine whether this is a genuine withdrawal, an internal rotation, or a redeployment of rebels to reinforce other positions,” said.

In the interim, fighting continues in Minembwe, South Kivu Province, as per statements released by the group between Tuesday, March 24, and Wednesday, March 25, where drone attacks attributed to Kinshasa have destroyed numerous homes and caused civilian casualties.

“The AFC/M23 condemns in the strongest possible terms these barbaric acts deliberately directed against the civilian population,” said Lawrence Kanyuka, spokesperson for the M23 rebels. “These attacks, which are part of a strategy of terror and collective punishment, constitute a flagrant violation of the most fundamental principles of international humanitarian law.”
